  • I made my own laundry detergent again.

The last batch lasted about 6 months.  The best part about this batch is that this time, instead of Fels Naptha or Zote, I used bars of Ivory Soap.  I do not like the harsh smell of Fels Naptha.  Zote smells nice, but Ivory Soap smells even better.  It smells clean.

  • 1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) shaved bar soap (Ivory, Zote or Fels Naptha).
  • 1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda.

I mixed this by hand.  I tried to blend this mixture in a blender to refine the Ivory Soap but my 40 year old avocado green blender was groaning and emitting smoke.  So… I learned to grate the Ivory as fine as I could with a cheese grater and to pay attention to make sure it is dissolved in the water.  One can scoop the detergent into a cup and add hot water to ensure that the soap breaks down.  I filled an old, clean sock with rice and tossed it into the detergent to keep it dry and to protect it from any humidity.

  • How to Get Grease and Oil Stains Off of Your Cement

It’s too easy.  Pour paint thinner or acetone-based nail polish remover on the stain and let it soak in.  Pour a clay based cat litter or sand on the stain.  Tamp it down with your foot or a shovel.  Let it sit overnight.  In the morning, grab a broom and dustpan and sweep it all up.  Voila!
